Atlast,onemorning,thepropellerwasquiet,andtheNarwhalwaspervadedwithanatmosphereofexcitement. Hefeltit,asdidtheotherdogs,andknewthatachangewasathand. Francoisleashedthemandbroughtthemondeck. Atthefirststepuponthecoldsurface,Buck’sfeetsankintoawhitemushysomethingverylikemud. Hesprangbackwithasnort. Moreofthiswhitestuffwasfallingthroughtheair. Heshookhimself,butmoreofitfelluponhim. Hesniffeditcuriously,thenlickedsomeuponhistongue. Itbitlikefire,andthenextinstantwasgone. Thispuzzledhim. Hetrieditagain,withthesameresult. Theonlookerslaugheduproariously,andhefeltashamed,heknewnotwhy,foritwashisfirstsnow.
