           Andsowelldidhefaceit,thatattheendofhalfanhourthewolvesdrewbackdiscomfited. Thetonguesofallwereoutandlolling,thewhitefangsshowingcruellywhiteinthemoonlight. Somewerelyingdownwithheadsraisedandearsprickedforward; othersstoodontheirfeet,watchinghim; andstillotherswerelappingwaterfromthepool. Onewolf,longandleanandgray,advancedcautiously,inafriendlymanner,andBuckrecognizedthewildbrotherwithwhomhehadrunforanightandaday. Hewaswhiningsoftly,and,asBuckwhined,theytouchednoses. 

           Thenanoldwolf,gauntandbattle-scarred,cameforward. Buckwrithedhislipsintothepreliminaryofasnarl,butsniffednoseswithhim. Whereupontheoldwolfsatdown,pointednoseatthemoon,andbrokeoutthelongwolfhowl.
