Thereisasenseofspectralwhirlingthroughliquidgulfsofinfinity,ofdizzyingridesthroughreelinguniversesonacomet’stail, andofhystericalplungesfromthepittothemoonandfromthemoonbackagaintothepit,alllivenedbyacachinnatingchorusofthedistorted,hilariouseldergodsandthegreen, bat-wingedmockingimpsofTartarus.
Outofthatdreamcamerescue—theVigilant,thevice-admiraltycourt,thestreetsofDunedin,andthelongvoyagebackhometotheoldhousebytheEgeberg. Hecouldnottell—theywouldthinkhimmad. Hewouldwriteofwhatheknewbeforedeathcame,buthiswifemustnotguess. Deathwouldbeaboonifonlyitcouldblotoutthememories.
