TheyalllayinstonehousesinTheirgreatcityofR’lyeh,preservedbythespellsofmightyCthulhuforagloriousresurrectionwhenthestarsandtheearthmightoncemorebereadyforThem. ButatthattimesomeforcefromoutsidemustservetoliberateTheirbodies. ThespellsthatpreservedThemintactlikewisepreventedThemfrommakinganinitialmove,andTheycouldonlylieawakeinthedarkandthinkwhilstuncountedmillionsofyearsrolledby. Theyknewallthatwasoccurringintheuniverse,forTheirmodeofspeechwastransmittedthought. EvennowTheytalkedinTheirtombs. When,afterinfinitiesofchaos,thefirstmencame,theGreatOldOnesspoketothesensitiveamongthembymouldingtheirdreams;foronlythuscouldTheirlanguagereachthefleshlymindsofmammals.
Then,whisperedCastro,thosefirstmenformedthecultaroundsmallidolswhichtheGreatOnesshewedthem;idolsbroughtindimerasfromdarkstars. Thatcultwouldneverdietillthestarscamerightagain,andthesecretpriestswouldtakegreatCthulhufromHistombtoreviveHissubjectsandresumeHisruleofearth.
