           Thedoorintothehallwasawideone.IhadrisenwhenCynthiadid,Johnwasclosebyme.TherewerethereforethreewitnesseswhocouldswearthatMrs.Inglethorpwascarryinghercoffee,asyetuntasted,inherhand.

           MyeveningwasutterlyandentirelyspoiltbythepresenceofDr.Bauerstein.Itseemedtomethemanwouldnevergo.Heroseatlast,however,andIbreathedasighofrelief.

           “I’llwalkdowntothevillagewithyou,”saidMr.Inglethorp.“Imustseeouragentoverthoseestateaccounts.”HeturnedtoJohn.“Nooneneedsitup.Iwilltakethelatch-key.”
