           Lawrence,theyounger,hadbeenadelicateyouth.Hehadqualifiedasadoctorbutearlyrelinquishedtheprofessionofmedicine,andlivedathomewhilepursuingliteraryambitions;thoughhisversesneverhadanymarkedsuccess.

           Johnpractisedforsometimeasabarrister,buthadfinallysettleddowntothemorecongeniallifeofacountrysquire.Hehadmarriedtwoyearsago,andhadtakenhiswifetoliveatStyles,thoughIentertainedashrewdsuspicionthathewouldhavepreferredhismothertoincreasehisallowance,whichwouldhaveenabledhimtohaveahomeofhisown.Mrs.Cavendish,however,wasaladywholikedtomakeherownplans,andexpectedotherpeopletofallinwiththem,andinthiscaseshecertainlyhadthewhiphand,namely:thepursestrings.
