           Butthecrowddidnotmove.Andthencameavoicethatthrilledthechildrenthroughandthrough.Foritspokeinaforeignlanguage.And,whatismore,itwasalanguagethattheyhadneverheard.TheyhadheardFrenchspokenandGerman.AuntEmmaknewGerman,andusedtosingasongaboutbedeutenandzeitenandbinandsin.NorwasitLatin.PeterhadbeeninLatinforfourterms.

           Itwassomecomfort,anyhow,tofindthatnoneofthecrowdunderstoodtheforeignlanguageanybetterthanthechildrendid.

           "What’sthathe’ssaying?"askedthefarmer,heavily.

           "SoundslikeFrenchtome,"saidtheStationMaster,whohadoncebeentoBoulognefortheday.

           "Itisn’tFrench!"criedPeter.

           "Whatisit,then?"askedmorethanonevoice.Thecrowdfellbackalittletoseewhohadspoken,andPeterpressedforward,sothatwhenthecrowdclosedupagainhewasinthefrontrank.
