           PhyllisandPetermetheratthebackdoor.Theywereunnaturallycleanandneat,andPhyllishadaredbowinherhair.TherewasonlyjusttimeforBobbietomakeherselftidyandtieupherhairwithabluebowbeforealittlebellrang.

           "There!"saidPhyllis,"that’stoshowthesurpriseisready.Nowyouwaittillthebellringsagainandthenyoumaycomeintothedining-room."

           SoBobbiewaited.

           "Tinkle,tinkle,"saidthelittlebell,andBobbiewentintothedining-room,feelingrathershy.Directlysheopenedthedoorshefoundherself,asitseemed,inanewworldoflightandflowersandsinging.MotherandPeterandPhylliswerestandinginarowattheendofthetable.Theshutterswereshutandthereweretwelvecandlesonthetable,oneforeachofRoberta’syears.Thetablewascoveredwithasortofpatternofflowers,andatRoberta’splacewasathickwreathofforget-me-notsandseveralmostinterestinglittlepackages.AndMotherandPhyllisandPeterweresingingtothefirstpartofthetuneofSt.Patrick’sDay.RobertaknewthatMotherhadwrittenthewordsonpurposeforherbirthday.ItwasalittlewayofMother’sonbirthdays.IthadbegunonBobbie’sfourthbirthdaywhenPhylliswasababy.BobbierememberedlearningtheversestosaytoFather‘forasurprise.’ShewonderedifMotherhadremembered,too.
