           Thenanotherdaywhenthechildrenthoughttheywouldliketofishinthecanal,aboyinabargethrewlumpsofcoalatthem,andoneofthesehitPhyllisonthebackoftheneck.Shewasjuststoopingdowntotieupherbootlaceandthoughthecoalhardlyhurtatallitmadehernotcareverymuchaboutgoingonfishing.

           Onthebridge,however,Robertafeltquitesafe,becauseshecouldlookdownonthecanal,andifanyboyshowedsignsofmeaningtothrowcoal,shecouldduckbehindtheparapet.

           Presentlytherewasasoundofwheels,whichwasjustwhatsheexpected.

           ThewheelswerethewheelsoftheDoctor’sdogcart,andinthecart,ofcourse,wastheDoctor.

           Hepulledup,andcalledout:—

           "Hullo,headnurse!Wantalift?"

           "Iwantedtoseeyou,"saidBobbie.

           "Yourmother’snotworse,Ihope?"saidtheDoctor.

           "Nobut—"

           "Well,skipin,then,andwe’llgoforadrive."

           Robertaclimbedinandthebrownhorsewasmadetoturnroundwhichitdidnotlikeatall,foritwaslookingforwardtoitsteaImeanitsoats.

           "ThisISjolly,"saidBobbie,asthedogcartflewalongtheroadbythecanal.

           "Wecouldthrowastonedownanyoneofyourthreechimneys,"saidtheDoctor,astheypassedthehouse.

           "Yes,"saidBobbie,"butyou’dhavetobeajollygoodshot.
