           "IKNOWthepaperchasehasgonelongago,"saidPhylliseverytwominutes,andshehardlyknewwhethershewaspleasedordisappointedwhenPeter,leaningovertheparapet,suddenlycried:—

           "Lookout.Herehecomes!"

           Theyallleanedoverthesun-warmedbrickwallintimetoseethehare,goingveryslowly,comeoutfromtheshadowofthetunnel.

           "There,now,"saidPeter,"whatdidItellyou?Nowforthehounds!"

           Verysooncamethehoundsbyonesandtwosandthreesandsixesandsevensandtheyalsoweregoingslowlyandseemedverytired.Twoorthreewholaggedfarbehindcameoutlongaftertheothers.

           "There,"saidBobbie,"that’sallnowwhatshallwedo?"

           "Goalongintothetulgywoodoverthereandhavelunch,"saidPhyllis;"wecanseethemformilesfromuphere."

           "Notyet,"saidPeter."That’snotthelast.
