           "Oh,she’llhaveleftthatunderthedoorstep,"saidthecartman;"folksdohereabouts."Hetookthelanternoffhiscartandstooped.

           "Ay,hereitis,rightenough,"hesaid.

           Heunlockedthedoorandwentinandsethislanternonthetable.

           "Gote’eracandle?"saidhe.

           "Idon’tknowwhereanythingis."Motherspokeratherlesscheerfullythanusual.

           Hestruckamatch.Therewasacandleonthetable,andhelightedit.Byitsthinlittleglimmerthechildrensawalargebarekitchenwithastonefloor.Therewerenocurtains,nohearth-rug.Thekitchentablefromhomestoodinthemiddleoftheroom.Thechairswereinonecorner,andthepots,pans,brooms,andcrockeryinanother.Therewasnofire,andtheblackgrateshowedcold,deadashes.

           Asthecartmanturnedtogooutafterhehadbroughtintheboxes,therewasarustling,scamperingsoundthatseemedtocomefrominsidethewallsofthehouse.
