Petersowedvegetableseedsinhis—carrotsandonionsandturnips.Theseedwasgiventohimbythefarmerwholivedintheniceblack-and-white,wood-and-plasterhousejustbeyondthebridge.Hekeptturkeysandguineafowls,andwasamostamiableman.ButPeter’svegetablesneverhadmuchofachance,becausehelikedtousetheearthofhisgardenfordiggingcanals,andmakingfortsandearthworksforhistoysoldiers.Andtheseedsofvegetablesrarelycometomuchinasoilthatisconstantlydisturbedforthepurposesofwarandirrigation.
