           Thesidesofthecuttingwereofgreystone,veryroughlyhewn.Indeed,thetoppartofthecuttinghadbeenalittlenaturalglenthathadbeencutdeepertobringitdowntothelevelofthetunnel’smouth.Amongtherocks,grassandflowersgrew,andseedsdroppedbybirdsinthecranniesofthestonehadtakenrootandgrownintobushesandtreesthatoverhungthecutting.Nearthetunnelwasaflightofstepsleadingdowntothelinejustwoodenbarsroughlyfixedintotheearthaverysteepandnarrowway,morelikealadderthanastair.

           "We’dbettergetdown,"saidPeter;"I’msurethecherrieswouldbequiteeasytogetatfromthesideofthesteps.Yourememberitwastherewepickedthecherryblossomsthatweputontherabbit’sgrave."

           Sotheywentalongthefencetowardsthelittleswinggatethatisatthetopofthesesteps.
