Despitethestate’ssafetyregulationstherewasnofireescapeonthissideofthehotel,andIsawthatmywindowscommandedonlyasheerthreestorydroptothecobbledcourtyard.Ontherightandleft,however,someancientbrickbusinessblocksabuttedonthehotel;theirslantroofscominguptoareasonablejumpingdistancefrommyfourth-storylevel.ToreacheitheroftheselinesofbuildingsIwouldhavetobeinaroomtwofrommyown—inonecaseonthenorthandintheothercaseonthesouth—andmymindinstantlysettoworkwhatchancesIhadofmakingthetransfer.
