Hisagewasperhapsthirty-five,buttheodd,deepcreasesinthesidesofhisneckmadehimseemolderwhenonedidnotstudyhisdull,expressionlessface.Hehadanarrowhead,bulging,watery-blueeyesthatseemednevertowink,aflatnose,arecedingforeheadandchin,andsingularlyundevelopedears.Hislongthicklipandcoarse-pored,greyishcheeksseemedalmostbeardlessexceptforsomesparseyellowhairsthatstraggledandcurledinirregularpatches;andinplacesthesurfaceseemedqueerlyirregular,asifpeelingfromsomecutaneousdisease.Hishandswerelargeandheavilyveined,andhadaveryunusualgreyish-bluetinge.Thefingerswerestrikinglyshortinproportiontotherestofthestructure,andseemedtohaveatendencytocurlcloselyintothehugepalm.AshewalkedtowardthebusIobservedhispeculiarlyshamblinggaitandsawthathisfeetwereinordinatelyimmense.ThemoreIstudiedthemthemoreIwonderedhowhecouldbuyanyshoestofitthem.
