ThelongerIlooked,themorethethingfascinatedme;andinthisfascinationtherewasacuriouslydisturbingelementhardlytobeclassifiedoraccountedfor.AtfirstIdecidedthatitwasthequeerother-worldlyqualityoftheartwhichmademeuneasy.AllotherartobjectsIhadeverseeneitherbelongedtosomeknownracialornationalstream,orelsewereconsciouslymodernisticdefiancesofeveryrecognizedstream.Thistiarawasneither.Itclearlybelongedtosomesettledtechniqueofinfinitematurityandperfection,yetthattechniquewasutterlyremotefromany—EasternorWestern,ancientormodern—whichIhadeverheardoforseenexemplified.Itwasasiftheworkmanshipwerethatofanotherplanet.
