"Ah,goodevening,Harry.Sitdown,"saidDumbledore,smiling."Ihopeyou’vehadanenjoyablefirstweekbackatschool?"
"Yes,thanks,sir,"saidHarry.
"Youmusthavebeenbusy,adetentionunderyourbeltalready!"
"Er,"beganHarryawkwardly,butDumbledoredidnotlooktoostern.
"IhavearrangedwithProfessorSnapethatyouwilldoyourdetentionnextSaturdayinstead."
"Right,"saidHarry,whohadmorepressingmattersonhismindthanSnape’sdetention,andnowlookedaroundsurreptitiouslyforsomeindicationofwhatDumbledorewasplanningtodowithhimthisevening.Thecircularofficelookedjustasitalwaysdid;thedelicatesilverinstrumentsstoodonspindle-leggedtables,puffingsmokeandwhirring;portraitsofpreviousheadmastersandheadmistressesdozedintheirframes,andDumbledore’smagnificentphoenix,Fawkes,stoodonhisperchbehindthedoor,watchingHarrywithbrightinterest.ItdidnotevenlookasthoughDumbledorehadclearedaspaceforduelingpractice.
