           Andshe,glancingathimacrosshershoulder,sawsomethingofallthisinhisface. Itwasatransfiguredface,withgreatshiningeyesthatgazedbeyondtheveilofsoundandsawbehindittheleapandpulseoflifeandthegiganticphantomsofthespirit. Shewasstartled. Theraw,stumblingloutwasgone. Theill-fittingclothes,batteredhands,andsunburnedfaceremained; buttheseseemedtheprison-barsthroughwhichshesawagreatsoullookingforth,inarticulateanddumbbecauseofthosefeeblelipsthatwouldnotgiveitspeech. Onlyforaflashingmomentdidsheseethis,thenshesawtheloutreturned,andshelaughedatthewhimofherfancy. Buttheimpressionofthatfleetingglimpselingered,andwhenthetimecameforhimtobeatastumblingretreatandgo,shelenthimthevolumeofSwinburne,andanotherofBrowningshewasstudyingBrowninginoneofherEnglishcourses. Heseemedsuchaboy,ashestoodblushingandstammeringhisthanks,thatawaveofpity,maternalinitsprompting,welledupinher. Shedidnotrememberthelout,northeimprisonedsoul,northemanwhohadstaredatherinallmasculinenessanddelightedandfrightenedher. Shesawbeforeheronlyaboy,whowasshakingherhandwithahandsocallousedthatitfeltlikeanutmeg-graterandraspedherskin,andwhowassayingjerkily:- 

           "Thegreatesttimeofmylife. Yousee,Iain’tusedtothings..." Helookedabouthimhelplessly. "Topeopleandhouseslikethis. It’sallnewtome,andIlikeit." 

           "Ihopeyou’llcallagain,"shesaid,ashewassayinggoodnighttoherbrothers. 

           Hepulledonhiscap,lurcheddesperatelythroughthedoorway,andwasgone. "Well,whatdoyouthinkofhim?"Arthurdemanded.
