Helayonacoralbeachwherethecocoanutsgrewdowntothemellow-soundingsurf. Thehulkofanancientwreckburnedwithbluefires,inthelightofwhichdancedthehuladancerstothebarbariclove-callsofthesingers,whochantedtotinklingukulelesandrumblingtom-toms. Itwasasensuous,tropicnight. Inthebackgroundavolcanocraterwassilhouettedagainstthestars. Overheaddriftedapalecrescentmoon,andtheSouthernCrossburnedlowinthesky.
Hewasaharp; alllifethathehadknownandthatwashisconsciousnesswasthestrings; andthefloodofmusicwasawindthatpouredagainstthosestringsandsetthemvibratingwithmemoriesanddreams. Hedidnotmerelyfeel. Sensationinvesteditselfinformandcolorandradiance,andwhathisimaginationdared,itobjectifiedinsomesublimatedandmagicway. Past,present,andfuturemingled; andhewentonoscillatingacrossthebroad,warmworld,throughhighadventureandnobledeedstoHer—ay,andwithher,winningher,hisarmabouther,andcarryingheroninflightthroughtheemperyofhismind.
