           Heheardwordsspokenthatweremeaninglesstohim, andotherwordsthathehadseenonlyinbooks andthatnomanorwomanhehadknownwasoflargeenoughmentalcalibertopronounce. Whenheheardsuchwordsdroppingcarelesslyfromthelipsofthemembersofthismarvellousfamily,herfamily,hethrilledwithdelight. Theromance,andbeauty,andhighvigorofthebookswerecomingtrue. Hewasinthatrareandblissfulstatewhereinamanseeshisdreamsstalkoutfromthecranniesoffantasyandbecomefact. 

           Neverhadhebeenatsuchanaltitudeofliving, andhekepthimselfinthebackground,listening,observing,andpleasuring,replyinginreticentmonosyllables,saying, "Yes,miss,"and"No,miss,"toher,and"Yes,ma’am,"and"No,ma’am,"tohermother. Hecurbedtheimpulse,arisingoutofhissea-training,tosay"Yes,sir,"and"No,sir,"toherbrothers. Hefeltthatitwouldbeinappropriateandaconfessionofinferiorityonhispartwhichwouldneverdoifhewastowintoher. Also,itwasadictateofhispride. "ByGod!"hecriedtohimself,once; "I’mjustasgoodasthem,andiftheydoknowlotsthatIdon’t,Icouldlearn’mafewmyself,allthesame!" Andthenextmoment,whensheorhermotheraddressedhimas"Mr.Eden," hisaggressivepridewasforgotten,andhewasglowingandwarmwithdelight. Hewasacivilizedman,thatwaswhathewas,shouldertoshoulder,atdinner,withpeoplehehadreadaboutinbooks. Hewasinthebookshimself,adventuringthroughtheprintedpagesofboundvolumes. 

           ButwhilehebeliedArthur’sdescription,andappearedagentlelambratherthanawildman,hewasrackinghisbrainsforacourseofaction. Hewasnogentlelamb,andthepartofsecondfiddlewouldneverdoforthehigh-pitcheddominanceofhisnature.
