ButhewasnowlearningfromSpencerthatheneverhadknown,andthathenevercouldhaveknownhadhecontinuedhissailingandwanderingforever. Hehadmerelyskimmedoverthesurfaceofthings,observingdetachedphenomena,accumulatingfragmentsoffacts,makingsuperficiallittlegeneralizations—andallandeverythingquiteunrelatedinacapriciousanddisorderlyworldofwhimandchance. Themechanismoftheflightofbirdshehadwatchedandreasonedaboutwithunderstanding; butithadneverenteredhisheadtotrytoexplaintheprocesswherebybirds,asorganicflyingmechanisms,hadbeendeveloped. Hehadneverdreamedtherewassuchaprocess. Thatbirdsshouldhavecometobe,wasunguessed. Theyalwayshadbeen. Theyjusthappened.
Andasitwaswithbirds,sohaditbeenwitheverything. Hisignorantandunpreparedattemptsatphilosophyhadbeenfruitless. ThemedievalmetaphysicsofKanthadgivenhimthekeytonothing,andhadservedthesolepurposeofmakinghimdoubthisownintellectualpowers. InsimilarmannerhisattempttostudyevolutionhadbeenconfinedtoahopelesslytechnicalvolumebyRomanes. Hehadunderstoodnothing,andtheonlyideahehadgatheredwasthatevolutionwasadry-as-dusttheory,ofalotoflittlemenpossessedofhugeandunintelligiblevocabularies. Andnowhelearnedthatevolutionwasnomeretheorybutanacceptedprocessofdevelopment; thatscientistsnolongerdisagreedaboutit,theironlydifferencesbeingoverthemethodofevolution.
