           Sothegreatdiscoverybegan. OncebeforehehadtriedSpencer,andchoosingthe"PrinciplesofPsychology"tobeginwith,hehadfailedasabjectlyashehadfailedwithMadamBlavatsky. Therehadbeennounderstandingthebook,andhehadreturneditunread. Butthisnight,afteralgebraandphysics,andanattemptatasonnet,hegotintobedandopened"FirstPrinciples." Morningfoundhimstillreading. Itwasimpossibleforhimtosleep. Nordidhewritethatday. Helayonthebedtillhisbodygrewtired,whenhetriedthehardfloor,readingonhisback,thebookheldintheairabovehim,orchangingfromsidetoside. Hesleptthatnight,anddidhiswritingnextmorning,andthenthebooktemptedhimandhefell,readingallafternoon,oblivioustoeverythingandoblivioustothefactthatthatwastheafternoonRuthgavetohim. HisfirstconsciousnessoftheimmediateworldabouthimwaswhenBernardHigginbothamjerkedopenthedooranddemandedtoknowifhethoughttheywererunningarestaurant. 

           MartinEdenhadbeenmasteredbycuriosityallhisdays. Hewantedtoknow,anditwasthisdesirethathadsenthimadventuringovertheworld.
