Thenherealizedthesignificanceofit,andhisheartbeganpoundingandchallenginghimtoplaytheloverwiththiswomanwhowasnotaspiritfromotherworldsbutamerewomanwithlipsacherrycouldstain. Hetrembledattheaudacityofhisthought; butallhissoulwassinging,andreason,inatriumphantpaean,assuredhimhewasright. Somethingofthischangeinhimmusthavereachedher,forshepausedfromherreading,lookedupathim,andsmiled. Hiseyesdroppedfromherblueeyestoherlips,andthesightofthestainmaddenedhim. Hisarmsallbutflashedouttoherandaroundher,inthewayofhisoldcarelesslife. Sheseemedtoleantowardhim,towait,andallhiswillfoughttoholdhimback.

Thenshelaughedathim,delightinginhisconfusion,andashelookedintoherfrankeyesandknewthatshehaddivinednothingofwhathefelt,hebecameabashed. Hehadindeedinthoughtdaredtoofar. Ofallthewomenhehadknowntherewasnowomanwhowouldnothaveguessed—saveher. Andshehadnotguessed. Therewasthedifference. Shewasdifferent. Hewasappalledbyhisowngrossness,awedbyherclearinnocence,andhegazedagainatheracrossthegulf. Thebridgehadbrokendown.
