"ButI’mnotusedtoit!"pleadedpoorAliceinapiteoustone. Andshethoughttoherself"Iwishthecreatureswouldn’tbesoeasilyoffended!"
"You’llgetusedtoitintime,"saidtheCaterpillar; anditputthehookahintoitsmouth,andbegansmokingagain.
ThistimeAlicewaitedpatientlyuntilitchosetospeakagain. InaminuteortwotheCaterpillartookthehookahoutofitsmouth,andyawnedonceortwice,andshookitself. Thenitgotdownoffthemushroom,andcrawledawayinthegrass,merelyremarking,asitwent, "Onesidewillmakeyougrowtaller,andtheothersidewillmakeyougrowshorter."
"Onesideofwhat? Theothersideofwhat? "thoughtAlicetoherself.
"Ofthemushroom,"saidtheCaterpillar,justasifshehadaskeditaloud; andinanothermomentitwasoutofsight.
Aliceremainedlookingthoughtfullyatthemushroomforaminute,tryingtomakeoutwhichwerethetwosidesofit; and,asitwasperfectlyround,shefoundthisaverydifficultquestion. However,atlastshestretchedherarmsrounditasfarastheywouldgo,andbrokeoffabitoftheedgewitheachhand.
