Someofthebirdshurriedoffatonce: oneoldMagpiebeganwrappingitselfupverycarefully,remarking, ‘Ireallymustbegettinghome;thenight-airdoesn’tsuitmythroat!’ andaCanarycalledoutinatremblingvoicetoitschildren,‘Comeaway,mydears! It’shightimeyouwereallinbed!’ Onvariouspretextstheyallmovedoff,andAlicewassoonleftalone.
‘IwishIhadn’tmentionedDinah!’ shesaidtoherselfinamelancholytone. ‘Nobodyseemstolikeher,downhere,andI’msureshe’sthebestcatintheworld! Oh,mydearDinah!
