           Firsttherewasthekitten. 

           Pollyannafoundthekittenmewingpitifullysomedistancedowntheroad. Whensystematicquestioningoftheneighborsfailedtofindanyonewhoclaimedit,Pollyannabroughtithomeatonce,asamatterofcourse. 

           "AndIwasgladIdidn’tfindanyonewhoownedit,too,"shetoldherauntinhappyconfidence; "‘causeIwantedtobringithomeallthetime. Ilovekitties. Iknewyou’dbegladtoletitlivehere." 

           MissPollylookedattheforlornlittlegraybunchofneglectedmiseryinPollyanna’sarms,andshivered:MissPollydidnotcareforcatsnotevenpretty,healthy,cleanones. 

           "Ugh!Pollyanna! Whatadirtylittlebeast! Andit’ssick,I’msure,andallmangyandfleay." 

           "Iknowit,poorlittlething,"croonedPollyanna,tenderly,lookingintothelittlecreature’sfrightenedeyes. "Andit’salltrembly,too,it’ssoscared. Youseeitdoesn’tknow,yet,thatwe’regoingtokeepit,ofcourse." 

           "Nonoranybodyelse,"retortedMissPolly,withmeaningemphasis. 

           "Oh,yes,theydo,"noddedPollyanna,entirelymisunderstandingheraunt’swords. "Itoldeverybodyweshouldkeepit,ifIdidn’tfindwhereitbelonged. Iknewyou’dbegladtohaveitpoorlittlelonesomething!"
