           Itwasoveratlast,however. Thegentlemendidapproach,andwhenMr.Wickhamwalkedintotheroom,Elizabethfeltthatshehadneitherbeenseeinghimbefore,northinkingofhimsince,withthesmallestdegreeofunreasonableadmiration. Theofficersoftheshirewereingeneralaverycreditable,gentlemanlikeset,andthebestofthemwereofthepresentparty; butMr.Wickhamwasasfarbeyondthemallinperson,countenance,air,andwalk,astheyweresuperiortothebroad-faced,stuffyunclePhillips,breathingportwine,whofollowedthemintotheroom. 

           Mr.Wickhamwasthehappymantowardswhomalmosteveryfemaleeyewasturned,andElizabethwasthehappywomanbywhomhefinallyseatedhimself; andtheagreeablemannerinwhichheimmediatelyfellintoconversation,thoughitwasonlyonitsbeingawetnight,madeherfeelthatthecommonest,dullest,mostthreadbaretopicmightberenderedinterestingbytheskillofthespeaker. 

           WithsuchrivalsforthenoticeofthefairasMr.Wickhamandtheofficers,Mr.Collinsseemedtosinkintoinsignificance; totheyoungladieshecertainlywasnothing; buthehadstillatintervalsakindlistenerinMrs.Phillips,andwasbyherwatchfulness,mostabundantlysuppliedwithcoffeeandmuffin. Whenthecard-tableswereplaced,hehadtheopportunityofobligingherinturn,bysittingdowntowhist. 

           "Iknowlittleofthegameatpresent,"saidhe,"butIshallbegladtoimprovemyself,forinmysituationinlife" Mrs.Phillipswasverygladforhiscompliance,butcouldnotwaitforhisreason.
