           MissBingleymadenoanswer,andsoonafterwardsshegotupandwalkedabouttheroom. Herfigurewaselegant,andshewalkedwell;butDarcy,atwhomitwasallaimed,wasstillinflexiblystudious. Inthedesperationofherfeelings,sheresolvedononeeffortmore,and,turningtoElizabeth,said: 

           "MissElizaBennet,letmepersuadeyoutofollowmyexample,andtakeaturnabouttheroom. Iassureyouitisveryrefreshingaftersittingsolonginoneattitude." 

           Elizabethwassurprised,butagreedtoitimmediately. MissBingleysucceedednolessintherealobjectofhercivility;Mr.Darcylookedup. HewasasmuchawaketothenoveltyofattentioninthatquarterasElizabethherselfcouldbe,andunconsciouslyclosedhisbook. Hewasdirectlyinvitedtojointheirparty,buthedeclinedit,observingthathecouldimaginebuttwomotivesfortheirchoosingtowalkupanddowntheroomtogether,witheitherofwhichmotiveshisjoiningthemwouldinterfere. "Whatcouldhemean? Shewasdyingtoknowwhatcouldbehismeaning?"andaskedElizabethwhethershecouldatallunderstandhim?
