           Lydiawasastout,well-growngirloffifteen,withafinecomplexionandgood-humouredcountenance;afavouritewithhermother,whoseaffectionhadbroughtherintopublicatanearlyage. Shehadhighanimalspirits,andasortofnaturalself-consequence,whichtheattentionoftheofficers,towhomheruncle’sgooddinners,andherowneasymannersrecommendedher,hadincreasedintoassurance. Shewasveryequal,therefore,toaddressMr.Bingleyonthesubjectoftheball,andabruptlyremindedhimofhispromise;adding,thatitwouldbethemostshamefulthingintheworldifhedidnotkeepit. Hisanswertothissuddenattackwasdelightfultotheirmother’sear: 

           "Iamperfectlyready,Iassureyou,tokeepmyengagement;andwhenyoursisterisrecovered,youshall,ifyouplease,nametheverydayoftheball. Butyouwouldnotwishtobedancingwhensheisill." 

           Lydiadeclaredherselfsatisfied. "Oh!yesitwouldbemuchbettertowaittillJanewaswell,andbythattimemostlikelyCaptainCarterwouldbeatMerytonagain. Andwhenyouhavegivenyourball,"sheadded,"Ishallinsistontheirgivingonealso. IshalltellColonelForsteritwillbequiteashameifhedoesnot."
