           Mrs.BennetwasinfacttoomuchoverpoweredtosayagreatdealwhileSirWilliamremained;butnosoonerhadheleftthemthanherfeelingsfoundarapidvent. Inthefirstplace,shepersistedindisbelievingthewholeofthematter; secondly,shewasverysurethatMr.Collinshadbeentakenin; thirdly,shetrustedthattheywouldneverbehappytogether;andfourthly,thatthematchmightbebrokenoff. Twoinferences,however,wereplainlydeducedfromthewhole: one,thatElizabethwastherealcauseofthemischief;andtheotherthatsheherselfhadbeenbarbarouslymisusedbythemall;andonthesetwopointssheprincipallydweltduringtherestoftheday. Nothingcouldconsoleandnothingcouldappeaseher. Nordidthatdaywearoutherresentment. AweekelapsedbeforeshecouldseeElizabethwithoutscoldingher,amonthpassedawaybeforeshecouldspeaktoSirWilliamorLadyLucaswithoutbeingrude,andmanymonthsweregonebeforeshecouldatallforgivetheirdaughter. 

           Mr.Bennet’semotionsweremuchmoretranquilontheoccasion,andsuchashedidexperiencehepronouncedtobeofamostagreeablesort; foritgratifiedhim,hesaid,todiscoverthatCharlotteLucas,whomhehadbeenusedtothinktolerablysensible,wasasfoolishashiswife,andmorefoolishthanhisdaughter! 

           Janeconfessedherselfalittlesurprisedatthematch; butshesaidlessofherastonishmentthanofherearnestdesirefortheirhappiness; norcouldElizabethpersuadehertoconsideritasimprobable. KittyandLydiawerefarfromenvyingMissLucas,forMr.Collinswasonlyaclergyman;anditaffectedtheminnootherwaythanasapieceofnewstospreadatMeryton. 

           LadyLucascouldnotbeinsensibleoftriumphonbeingabletoretortonMrs.Bennetthecomfortofhavingadaughterwellmarried;
