           ThesteadycountenancewhichMissLucashadcommandedintellingherstory,gavewaytoamomentaryconfusionhereonreceivingsodirectareproach; though,asitwasnomorethansheexpected,shesoonregainedhercomposure,andcalmlyreplied: 

           "Whyshouldyoubesurprised,mydearEliza? DoyouthinkitincrediblethatMr.Collinsshouldbeabletoprocureanywoman’sgoodopinion,becausehewasnotsohappyastosucceedwithyou?" 

           ButElizabethhadnowrecollectedherself,andmakingastrongeffortforit,wasabletoassurewithtolerablefirmnessthattheprospectoftheirrelationshipwashighlygratefultoher,andthatshewishedherallimaginablehappiness. 

           "Iseewhatyouarefeeling,"repliedCharlotte. "Youmustbesurprised,verymuchsurprisedsolatelyasMr.Collinswaswishingtomarryyou. Butwhenyouhavehadtimetothinkitover,IhopeyouwillbesatisfiedwithwhatIhavedone. Iamnotromantic,youknow;Ineverwas. Iaskonlyacomfortablehome; andconsideringMr.Collins’scharacter,connection,andsituationinlife,Iamconvincedthatmychanceofhappinesswithhimisasfairasmostpeoplecanboastonenteringthemarriagestate." 

           Elizabethquietlyanswered"Undoubtedly;"andafteranawkwardpause,theyreturnedtotherestofthefamily. Charlottedidnotstaymuchlonger,andElizabethwasthenlefttoreflectonwhatshehadheard. Itwasalongtimebeforeshebecameatallreconciledtotheideaofsounsuitableamatch. ThestrangenessofMr.Collins’smakingtwooffersofmarriagewithinthreedayswasnothingincomparisonofhisbeingnowaccepted. ShehadalwaysfeltthatCharlotte’sopinionofmatrimonywasnotexactlylikeherown,butshehadnotsupposedittobepossiblethat,whencalledintoaction,shewouldhavesacrificedeverybetterfeelingtoworldlyadvantage.
