           Elizabethwouldnotopposesuchaninjunctionandamoment’sconsiderationmakingheralsosensiblethatitwouldbewisesttogetitoverassoonandasquietlyaspossible,shesatdownagainandtriedtoconceal,byincessantemploymentthefeelingswhichweredividedbetweendistressanddiversion. Mrs.BennetandKittywalkedoff,andassoonastheyweregone,Mr.Collinsbegan. 

           "Believeme,mydearMissElizabeth,thatyourmodesty,sofarfromdoingyouanydisservice,ratheraddstoyourotherperfections. Youwouldhavebeenlessamiableinmyeyeshadtherenotbeenthislittleunwillingness; butallowmetoassureyou,thatIhaveyourrespectedmother’spermissionforthisaddress. Youcanhardlydoubtthepurportofmydiscourse,howeveryournaturaldelicacymayleadyoutodissemble; myattentionshavebeentoomarkedtobemistaken. AlmostassoonasIenteredthehouse,Isingledyououtasthecompanionofmyfuturelife. ButbeforeIamrunawaywithbymyfeelingsonthissubject,perhapsitwouldbeadvisableformetostatemyreasonsformarryingand,moreover,forcomingintoHertfordshirewiththedesignofselectingawife,asIcertainlydid." 

           TheideaofMr.Collins,withallhissolemncomposure,beingrunawaywithbyhisfeelings,madeElizabethsonearlaughing,thatshecouldnotusetheshortpauseheallowedinanyattempttostophimfurther,andhecontinued: 

           "Myreasonsformarryingare,first,thatIthinkitarightthingforeveryclergymanineasycircumstances(likemyself)tosettheexampleofmatrimonyinhisparish; secondly,thatIamconvincedthatitwilladdverygreatlytomyhappiness; andthirdlywhichperhapsIoughttohavementionedearlier,thatitistheparticularadviceandrecommendationoftheverynobleladywhomIhavethehonourofcallingpatroness.
