Technicallyitwaspossibletodrivethembackwithanoverwhelmingshowofforce.AfterseveralloopstheMimicswouldrealizetheycouldn’twin,andtheywouldwithdrawwithasfewcasualtiesaspossible.Butthatwasn’tthesameasdefeatingthem.Theywouldsimplyretreatbeneaththeocean,outofhumanity’sreach,andgathertheirstrength.Oncetheyhadassembledaninsurmountableforce,theywouldattackagain,andtherewouldbenostoppingthemasecondtime.
FightingawarwiththeMimicswasalotlikeplayingagamewithachild.Theyhaddecidedtheyweregoingtowinbeforethegamehadevenstarted,andtheywouldn’tgiveupuntiltheywon.Littlebylittle,humanitywaslosingground.
ThedurationoftheMimictimeloopswasapproximatelythirtyhours.Ritarepeatedeachlooponlyonce.Thefirsttimethroughabattlesheassessedthecasualtieshersquadsustained;thesecondtimethroughshewon.Inthatfirstpassshecouldseewhatthestrategywasandlearnwhodied.Butthelivesofherfriendswereinthemercilesshandsoffate.Thatcouldn’tbechanged.
Beforeeachbattle,Ritasecludedherselftoclearherthoughts.OneoftheprivilegesofherstationwasthatRitahadherownprivateroomthatnoonewasallowedtoenter.
Rita’ssquadunderstoodthatthethirtyhoursbeforeabattlewereaspecialtimeforher.Theaveragesoldierinthesquadwasn’tawareofthetimeloop,buttheyknewthatRitahadherreasonsfornotwantingtotalktoanyoneinthetimeleadinguptobattle.Theykepttheirdistanceoutofrespect.
