Chapter 1

           Ihadnotbeenathomeabovetendays,whenCaptainWilliamRobinson,aCornishman,commanderoftheHopewell,astoutshipofthreehundredtons,cametomyhouse.Ihadformerlybeensurgeonofanothershipwherehewasmaster,andafourthpartowner,inavoyagetotheLevant.Hehadalwaystreatedmemorelikeabrother,thananinferiorofficer;and,hearingofmyarrival,mademeavisit,asIapprehendedonlyoutoffriendship,fornothingpassedmorethanwhatisusualafterlongabsences.Butrepeatinghisvisitsoften,expressinghisjoytofindImeingoodhealth,asking,"whetherIwerenowsettledforlife?"adding,"thatheintendedavoyagetotheEastIndiesintwomonths,"atlastheplainlyinvitedme,thoughwithsomeapologies,tobesurgeonoftheship;"thatIshouldhaveanothersurgeonunderme,besideourtwomates;thatmysalaryshouldbedoubletotheusualpay;andthathavingexperiencedmyknowledgeinsea-affairstobeatleastequaltohis,hewouldenterintoanyengagementtofollowmyadvice,asmuchasifIhadsharedinthecommand."

           Hesaidsomanyotherobligingthings,andIknewhimtobesohonestaman,thatIcouldnotrejectthisproposal;thethirstIhadofseeingtheworld,notwithstandingmypastmisfortunes,continuingasviolentasever.Theonlydifficultythatremained,wastopersuademywife,whoseconsenthoweverIatlastobtained,bytheprospectofadvantagesheproposedtoherchildren.
