           Jackcrouchedwithhisfaceafewinchesawayfromthisclue,thenstaredforwardintothesemi-darknessoftheundergrowth.Hissandyhair,considerablylongerthanithadbeenwhentheydroppedin,waslighternow;andhisbarebackwasamassofdarkfrecklesandpeelingsunburn.Asharpenedstickaboutfivefeetlongtrailedfromhisrighthand,andexceptforapairoftatteredshortsheldupbyhisknife-belthewasnaked.Heclosedhiseyes,raisedhisheadandbreathedingentlywithflarednostrils,assessingthecurrentofwarmairforinformation.Theforestandhewereverystill.

           Atlengthheletouthisbreathinalongsighandopenedhiseyes.Theywerebrightblue,eyesthatinthisfrustrationseemedboltingandnearlymad.Hepassedhistongueacrossdrylipsandscannedtheuncommunicativeforest.Thenagainhestoleforwardandcastthiswayandthatovertheground.
