Alongtheshorewardedgeoftheshallowstheadvancingclearnesswasfullofstrange,moonbeam-bodiedcreatureswithfieryeyes.Hereandtherealargerpebbleclungtoitsownairandwascoveredwithacoatofpearls.Thetideswelledinovertherain-pittedsandandsmoothedeverythingwithalayerofsilver.Nowittouchedthefirstofthestainsthatseepedfromthebrokenbodyandthecreaturesmadeamovingpatchoflightastheygatheredattheedge.ThewaterrosefartheranddressedSimon’scoarsehairwithbrightness.Thelineofhischeeksilveredandtheturnofhisshoulderbecamesculpturedmarble.Thestrangeattendantcreatures,withtheirfieryeyesandtrailingvapors,busiedthemselvesroundhishead.Thebodyliftedafractionofaninchfromthesandandabubbleofairescapedfromthemouthwithawetplop.Thenitturnedgentlyinthewater.
Somewhereoverthedarkenedcurveoftheworldthesunandmoonwerepulling,andthefilmofwaterontheearthplanetwasheld,bulgingslightlyononesidewhilethesolidcoreturned.
