           Whathadshemeantbythat?Thewordswereenigmatical—significant.Wasitpossiblethatsheknewmorethanwesupposed?Shehaddeniedallknowledgeofthemysteriousmissionwithwhichherhusbandwastohaveentrustedhisson.Butwasshereallylessignorantthanshepretended?Couldsheenlightenusifshechose,andwashersilencepartofacarefullythoughtoutandpreconceivedplan?

           ThemoreIthoughtaboutit,themoreIwasconvincedthatIwasright.Mrs.Renauldknewmorethanshechosetotell.Inhersurpriseatseeingherson,shehadmomentarilybetrayedherself.Ifeltconvincedthatsheknew,ifnottheassassins,atleastthemotivefortheassassination.Butsomeverypowerfulconsiderationsmustkeephersilent.
