           WELL,whentheywasallgonethekingheasksMaryJanehowtheywasoffforsparerooms,andshesaidshehadonespareroom,whichwoulddoforUncleWilliam,andshe’dgiveherownroomtoUncleHarvey,whichwasalittlebigger,andshewouldturnintotheroomwithhersistersandsleeponacot;andupgarretwasalittlecubby,withapalletinit.Thekingsaidthecubbywoulddoforhisvalleymeaningme.

           SoMaryJanetookusup,andsheshowedthemtheirrooms,whichwasplainbutnice.Shesaidshe’dhaveherfrocksandalotofothertrapstookoutofherroomiftheywasinUncleHarvey’sway,buthesaidtheywarn’t.Thefrockswashungalongthewall,andbeforethemwasacurtainmadeoutofcalicothathungdowntothefloor.Therewasanoldhairtrunkinonecorner,andaguitar-boxinanother,andallsortsoflittleknickknacksandjimcracksaround,likegirlsbriskenuparoomwith.Thekingsaiditwasallthemorehomelyandmorepleasanterforthesefixings,andsodon’tdisturbthem.Theduke’sroomwasprettysmall,butplentygoodenough,andsowasmycubby.

           Thatnighttheyhadabigsupper,andallthemmenandwomenwasthere,andIstoodbehindthekingandtheduke’schairsandwaitedonthem,andtheniggerswaitedontherest.
