AsoneapproacheddowntheHomePaddockthehouseanditsghostgumstooktheeyefirst,butthenonewasawareofmanyotheryellowsandstonehousesofonestorybehinditandtoeachside,interlockingwiththemainstructurebymeansofroofedrampssmotheredincreepers.Awidegraveldrivewaysucceededthewheelrutsofthetrack,curvingtoacircularparkingareaatonesideofthebighouse,butalsocontinuingbeyonditandoutofsightdowntowheretherealbusinessofDroghedalay:thestockyards,theshearingshed,thebarns.PrivatelyFatherRalphpreferredthegiantpeppertreeswhichshadedalltheseoutbuildingsandtheirattendantactivitiestotheghostgumsofthemainhouse.Peppertreesweredensewithpale-greenfrondsandalivewiththesoundofbees,justtherightlazysortoffoliageforanOutbackstation.
