Thetroublewasthatshedidn’tpermitlovethewayDanedid,nordidsheevergiveMeggiethewonderfulfeelingofbeingneeded.Shewasn’tmateyorfullofpranks,andshehadadisastroushabitofputtingpeopledown,chiefly,itseemed,hermother.MeggiefoundmuchinherthathadbeenexasperatinginLuke,butatleastJustinewasn’tamiser.Forthatmuchbethankful.
Athrivingairlinemeantthatallthechildren’svacations,eventheshortestones,couldbespentonDrogheda.However,afteraninitialperiodofadjustmentbothchildrenenjoyedtheirschooling.DanewasalwayshomesickafteravisittoDrogheda,butJustinetooktoSydneyasifshehadalwayslivedthere,andspentherDroghedatimelongingtobebackinthecity.TheRiverviewJesuitsweredelighted;Danewasamarvelousstudent,intheclassroomandontheplayingfield.TheKincoppalnuns,ontheotherhand,weredefinitelynotdelighted;noonewitheyesandatongueassharpasJustine’scouldhopetobepopular.AclassaheadofDane,shewasperhapsthebetterstudentofthetwo,butonlyintheclassroom.
