Inspiteofthemutedgroansandsoundsofdisgust,everyoneincludingStupolishedhisplatecleanwithbread,andateseveralslicesmorespreadthicklywithbutterandnativegooseberryjam.Feesatdownandboltedhermeal,thengotupatoncetohurrytoherworktableagain,whereintobigsoupplatesshedoledoutgreatquantitiesofbiscuitmadewithplentyofsugarandlacedallthroughwithjam.Ariverofsteaminghotcustardsaucewaspouredovereach,andagainsheploddedtothediningtablewiththeplates,twoatatime.Finallyshesatdownwithasigh;thisshecouldeatatherleisure.
"Oh,goodie!Jamroly-poly!"Meggieexclaimed,sloppingherspoonupanddowninthecustarduntilthejamseepedthroughtomakepinkstreaksintheyellow.
"Well,Meggiegirl,it’syourbirthday,soMummadeyourfavoritepudding,"herfathersaid,smiling.
Therewerenocomplaintsthistime;nomatterwhatthepuddingwas,itwasconsumedwithgusto.TheClearysallhadasweettooth.
Noonecarriedapoundofsuperfluousflesh,inspiteofthevastquantitiesofstarchyfood.Theyexpendedeveryouncetheyateinworkorplay.Vegetablesandfruitwereeatenbecausetheyweregoodforyou,butitwasthebread,potatoes,meatandhotflourypuddingswhichstavedoffexhaustion.
