ThefirstthingLucynoticedasshewentinwasaburringsound,andthefirstthingshesawwasakindlookingoldshe-beaversittinginthecornerwithathreadinhermouthworkingbusilyathersewingmachine,anditwasfromitthatthesoundcame.Shestoppedherworkandgotupassoonasthechildrencamein.
"Soyou’vecomeatlast!"shesaid,holdingoutbothherwrinkledoldpaws."Atlast!TothinkthateverIshouldlivetoseethisday!Thepotatoesareonboilingandthekettle’ssingingandIdaresay,MrBeaver,you’llgetussomefish."
"ThatIwill,"saidMrBeaver,andhewentoutofthehouse(Peterwentwithhim),andacrosstheiceofthedeeppooltowherehehadalittleholeintheicewhichhekeptopeneverydaywithhishatchet.Theytookapailwiththem.MrBeaversatdownquietlyattheedgeofthehole(hedidn’tseemtominditbeingsochilly),lookedhardintoit,thensuddenlyshotinhispaw,andbeforeyoucouldsayJackRobinsonhadwhiskedoutabeautifultrout.Thenhediditalloveragainuntiltheyhadafinecatchoffish.
MeanwhilethegirlswerehelpingMrsBeavertofillthekettleandlaythetableandcutthebreadandputtheplatesintheoventoheatanddrawahugejugofbeerforMrBeaverfromabarrelwhichstoodinonecornerofthehouse,andtoputonthefrying-panandgetthedrippinghot.LucythoughttheBeavershadaverysnuglittlehomethoughitwasnotatalllikeMrTumnus’scave.Therewerenobooksorpictures,andinsteadofbedstherewerebunks,likeonboardship,builtintothewall.Andtherewerehamsandstringsofonionshangingfromtheroof,andagainstthewallsweregumbootsandoilskinsandhatchetsandpairsofshearsandspadesandtrowelsandthingsforcarryingmortarinandfishing-rodsandfishing-netsandsacks.
