Lucy looks into a Wardrobe
Nextmomentshefound thatwhatwasrubbingagainstherfaceandhandswasnolongersoftfur butsomethinghardandroughandevenprickly. "Why,itisjustlikebranchesoftrees!"exclaimedLucy. Andthenshesawthattherewasalightaheadofher; notafewinchesawaywherethebackofthewardrobeoughttohavebeen,butalongwayoff. Somethingcoldandsoftwasfallingonher. Amomentlatershefoundthatshewasstandinginthemiddleofawood atnight-timewithsnowunderherfeet andsnowflakesfallingthroughtheair.
Lucyfeltalittlefrightened, butshefeltveryinquisitiveandexcitedaswell. Shelookedbackoverhershoulderandthere, betweenthedarktreetrunks; shecouldstillseetheopendoorwayofthewardrobe andevencatchaglimpseoftheemptyroomfromwhichshehadsetout. (Shehad,ofcourse,leftthedooropen,forsheknewthatitisaverysillythingtoshutoneselfintoawardrobe.) Itseemedtobestilldaylightthere. "Icanalwaysgetbackifanythinggoeswrong,"thoughtLucy. Shebegantowalkforward, crunch-crunchoverthesnowandthroughthewoodtowardstheotherlight. Inabouttenminutesshereachedit andfounditwasalamp-post. Asshestoodlookingatit,wonderingwhytherewasalamp-postinthemiddleofawood andwonderingwhattodonext, sheheardapitterpatteroffeetcomingtowardsher. Andsoonafterthataverystrangepersonsteppedoutfromamongthetreesintothelightofthelamp-post.
HewasonlyalittletallerthanLucyherself andhecarriedoverhisheadanumbrella,whitewithsnow. Fromthewaistupwardshewaslikeaman, buthislegswereshapedlikeagoat’s(thehaironthemwasglossyblack)andinsteadoffeethehadgoat’shoofs.
