Thentheycameoutofthenarrowvalleyandatonceshesawthereason.TherestoodPeterandEdmundandalltherestofAslan’sarmyfightingdesperatelyagainstthecrowdofhorriblecreatureswhomshehadseenlastnight;onlynow,inthedaylight,theylookedevenstrangerandmoreevilandmoredeformed.Therealsoseemedtobefarmoreofthem.Peter’sarmy-whichhadtheirbackstoherlookedterriblyfew.Andtherewerestatuesdottedalloverthebattlefield,soapparentlytheWitchhadbeenusingherwand.Butshedidnotseemtobeusingitnow.Shewasfightingwithherstoneknife.ItwasPetershewasfightin-bothofthemgoingatitsohardthatLucycouldhardlymakeoutwhatwashappening;sheonlysawthestoneknifeandPeter’sswordflashingsoquicklythattheylookedlikethreeknivesandthreeswords.Thatpairwereinthecentre.Oneachsidethelinestretchedout.Horriblethingswerehappeningwherevershelooked.
"Offmyback,children,"shoutedAslan.Andtheybothtumbledoff.ThenwitharoarthatshookallNarniafromthewesternlamp-posttotheshoresoftheeasternseathegreatbeastflunghimselfupontheWhiteWitch.Lucysawherfaceliftedtowardshimforonesecondwithanexpressionofterrorandamazement.ThenLionandWitchhadrolledovertogetherbutwiththeWitchunderneath;andatthesamemomentallwar-likecreatureswhomAslanhadledfromtheWitch’shouserushedmadlyontheenemylines,dwarfswiththeirbattleaxes,dogswithteeth,theGiantwithhisclub(andhisfeetalsocrusheddozensofthefoe),unicornswiththeirhorns,centaurswithswordsandhoofs.AndPeter’stiredarmycheered,andthenewcomersroared,andtheenemysquealedandgibberedtillthewoodre-echoedwiththedinofthatonset.
