Duringhismomentaryabsencetheygazedateachotherinsilence,allbuttheMajor,whocrossedhisarmsandsaid:
"Well,now,Paganel,youmustownthiswouldbegoingalittletoofar."
"What?"growledPaganel,lookinglikeagiganticnoteofinterrogation,withhisspectaclesonhisforeheadandhisstoopingback.
AustinreturneddirectlywiththeletterwrittenbyPaganelandsignedbyGlenarvan.
"WillyourHonorreadit?"hesaid,handingittohim.
Glenarvantooktheletterandreadasfollows:
"OrdertoTomAustintoputouttoseawithoutdelay,andtotaketheDuncan,bylatitude37degreestotheeasterncoastofNewZealand!"
"NewZealand!"criedPaganel,leapingup.
AndheseizedtheletterfromGlenarvan,rubbedhiseyes,pusheddownhisspectaclesonhisnose,andreaditforhimself.
"NewZealand!"herepeatedinanindescribabletone,lettingtheorderslipbetweenhisfingers.
Thatsamemomenthefeltahandlaidonhisshoulder,andturningroundfoundhimselffacetofacewiththeMajor,whosaidinagravetone:
"Well,mygoodPaganel,afterall,itisaluckythingyoudidnotsendtheDuncantoCochinChina!"
Thispleasantryfinishedthepoorgeographer.ThecrewburstoutintoloudHomericlaughter.Paganelranaboutlikeamadman,seizedhisheadwithbothhandsandtorehishair.Heneitherknewwhathewasdoingnorwhathewantedtodo.Herusheddownthepoopstairsmechanicallyandpacedthedeck,noddingtohimselfandgoingstraightbeforewithoutaimorobjecttillhereachedtheforecastle.
