           Glenarvanlethimselfgentlydowntheslope;soonLadyHelenaandhelandedonthenarrowtrackwhereRobertwaitedforthem.

           Theropewasshakenthreetimes,andinhisturnJohnMangles,precedingMaryGrant,followedinthedangerousroute.

           Hearrivedsafely;herejoinedLordandLadyGlenarvaninthehollowmentionedbyRobert.

           Fiveminutesafter,allthefugitiveshadsafelyescapedfromtheWare-Atoua,lefttheirretreat,andkeepingawayfromtheinhabitedshoresofthelakes,theyplungedbynarrowpathsintotherecessesofthemountains.

           Theywalkedquickly,tryingtoavoidthepointswheretheymightbeseenfromthepah.Theywerequitesilent,andglidedamongthebusheslikeshadows.
