Such,then,wasthePERSONNELofthisyacht,sounexpectedlycalledtomakeoneofthemostwonderfulvoyagesofmoderntimes.FromthehourshereachedthesteamboatquayatGlasgow,shecompletelymonopolizedthepublicattention.Aconsiderablecrowdvisitedhereveryday,andtheDuncanwastheonetopicofinterestandconversation,tothegreatvexationofthedifferentcaptainsintheport,amongothersofCaptainBurton,incommandoftheSCOTIA,amagnificentsteamerlyingclosebesideher,andboundforCalcutta.Consideringhersize,theSCOTIAmightjustlylookupontheDuncanasamerefly-boat,andyetthispleasureyachtofLordGlenarvanwasquitethecenterofattraction,andtheexcitementaboutherdailyincreased.
TheDuncanwastosailoutwiththetideatthreeo’clockonthemorningofthe25thofAugust.Butbeforestarting,atouchingceremonywaswitnessedbythegoodpeopleofGlasgow.Ateighto’clockthenightbefore,LordGlenarvanandhisfriends,andtheentirecrew,fromthestokerstothecaptain,allwhoweretotakepartinthisself-sacrificingvoyage,lefttheyachtandrepairedtoSt.Mungo’s,theancientcathedralofthecity.
