Thepassengersandsailorsontheyachtwerewatchingalltheanimal’smovementswiththeliveliestinterest. Hesooncamewithinreachofthebait,turnedoveronhisbacktomakeagooddartatit,andinasecondbaconandcontentshaddisappeared. Hehadhookedhimselfnow,asthetremendousjerkhegavethecableproved,andthesailorsbegantohaulinthemonsterbymeansoftackleattachedtothemainyard. Hestruggleddesperately,buthiscaptorswerepreparedforhisviolence,andhadalongropereadywithaslipknot,whichcaughthistailandrenderedhimpowerlessatonce. Inafewminutesmorehewashoistedupoverthesideoftheyachtandthrownonthedeck. Amancameforwardimmediately,hatchetinhand,andapproachinghimcautiously,withonepowerfulstrokecutoffhistail.
Thisendedthebusiness,fortherewasnolongeranyfearoftheshark. But,thoughthesailors’vengeancewassatisfied,theircuriositywasnot; theyknewthebrutehadnoverydelicateappetite,andthecontentsofhisstomachmightbeworthinvestigation. Thisisthecommonpracticeonallshipswhenasharkiscaptured, butLadyGlenarvandeclinedtobepresentatsuchadisgustingexploration,andwithdrewtothecabinagain. Thefishwasstillbreathing; itmeasuredtenfeetinlength,andweighedmorethansixhundredpounds. Thiswasnothingextraordinary,forthoughthehammer-headedsharkisnotclassedamongthemostgiganticofthespecies,itisalwaysreckonedamongthemostformidable.
Thehugebrutewassoonrippedupinaveryunceremoniousfashion. Thehookhadfixedrightinthestomach,whichwasfoundtobeabsolutelyempty,andthedisappointedsailorswerejustgoingtothrowtheremainsoverboard,whentheboatswain’sattentionwasattractedbysomelargeobjectstickingfastinoneoftheviscera.
