           Justatthatmomentapleasant-facedman,aboutfiftyyearsofage,cameoutofthehouse,warned,bytheloudbarkingoffourdogs,ofthearrivalofstrangers.Hewasfollowedbyfivehandsomestrappinglads,hissons,andtheirmother,afinetallwoman.Therewasnomistakingthelittlegroup.ThiswasaperfecttypeoftheIrishcolonist—amanwho,wearyofthemiseriesofhiscountry,hadcome,withhisfamily,toseekfortuneandhappinessbeyondtheseas.

           BeforeGlenarvanandhispartyhadtimetoreachthehouseandpresentthemselvesindueform,theyheardthecordialwords:"Strangers!welcometothehouseofPaddyO’Moore!"
