           Possiblyhemighthavethoughtthatsomedaytheywouldachievetheirindependence,astheUnitedStatesdidanexampledoubtlesstobefollowedeventuallybyAustraliaandIndia.Butwhatevermightbehissecretmotives,suchwashisdreamofcolonization.But,asiseasilyunderstood,theGovernmentopposedhisplans,andputdifficultiesenoughinhiswaytohavekilledanordinaryman.ButHarrywouldnotbebeaten.Heappealedtothepatriotismofhiscountrymen,placedhisfortuneattheserviceofthecause,builtaship,andmanneditwithapickedcrew,andleavinghischildrentothecareofhisoldcousinsetofftoexplorethegreatislandsofthePacific.Thiswasin1861,andfortwelvemonths,oruptoMay,1862,letterswereregularlyreceivedfromhim,butnotidingswhateverhadcomesincehisdeparturefromCallao,inJune,andthenameoftheBritannianeverappearedintheShippingList.

           Justatthisjuncturetheoldcousindied,andHarryGrant’stwochildrenwereleftaloneintheworld.

           MaryGrantwasthenonlyfourteen,butsheresolvedtofacehersituationbravely,andtodevoteherselfentirelytoherlittlebrother,whowasstillamerechild.Bydintofcloseeconomy,combinedwithtactandprudence,shemanagedtosupportandeducatehim,workingdayandnight,denyingherselfeverything,thatshemightgivehimallheneeded,watchingoverhimandcaringforhimlikeamother.

           ThetwochildrenwerelivinginthistouchingmannerinDundee,strugglingpatientlyandcourageouslywiththeirpoverty.Marythoughtonlyofherbrother,andindulgedindreamsofaprosperousfutureforhim.ShehadlonggivenupallhopeoftheBritannia,andwasfullypersuadedthatherfatherwasdead.What,then,washeremotionwhensheaccidentallysawthenoticeintheTIMES!
